Unexplained spikes in your water bill or the sound of running water when everything is turned off can be signs of a hidden water leak. One of the most effective ways to pinpoint if you have a leak is by checking at the water meter. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you determine if water is escaping your system undetected.
Locate Your Water Meter
Most residential water meters are housed in a box near the street or at the edge of your property. Lift the cover carefully using a screwdriver or similar tool, as the inside can sometimes be dirty or home to insects.
Turn Off All Water Inside and Outside
Before checking the meter, make sure all water-using appliances and faucets—both indoors and outdoors—are completely turned off. Don’t forget irrigation systems, ice makers, and washing machines.
Read the Meter
Take note of the numbers on your meter. Most meters have a sweep hand or a small triangle (often called a leak indicator) that spins when water is flowing. If everything in your home is off and the indicator is still moving, it’s a clear sign water is flowing somewhere—it could mean a leak.
Wait and Recheck
If your meter doesn’t have a leak indicator, write down the current reading and then wait at least 30 minutes without using any water. When you check again, if the numbers have changed, you likely have a leak in your system. Most digital meter will show 0.00 water usage if all the water taps are off inside the home
Narrow Down the Leak Location
To determine if the leak is inside or outside your home, locate the shut-off valve for your house, some or older homes may not have one, (usually where the water line enters your home) and turn it off. Check the meter again. If the indicator stops, the leak is inside; if it keeps moving, the leak is likely in the line between the meter and your home.
What to Do If You Find a Leak
If you suspect a leak, it’s best to call a L&P Plumbing to investigate and fix the issue. Early detection can help prevent water damage and reduce costs on your utility bill.
Regularly checking your water meter is a quick and easy way to catch leaks before they become major problems. Make it a part of your home maintenance routine for peace of mind and to protect your property.
